DevLog_04 Graphics & Presentation

Graphics & Presentation

This week I have been working on the graphical presentation and, by extension, atmosphere of the game.

Artwork

In previous weeks I have already been slowly building up the art of the game, so this week I have tried to finalise the majority of the art.

I made some more teeth for the first level. This time they are the teeth that Ampi walks on. This was a bit more difficult than the previous art because it needs to be interactable and stable under the foot of the player, too many jagged edges will affect the fluidity.

The teeth. What lovely, clean chompers!

I’ve also added a feature where Ampi changes colours with each life/dose. I chose 4 colours that seem to go okay together and aren’t too bright or too dull for the scene.

Style Continuity

I also had to be consistent with the style of art used. I’ve tried to use the same brush in procreate, and also set up a colour palette with an adobe colour wheel, trying to mostly stick to complementary colours in my palette.

Just a colour palette. Nothing exciting here.

I have also added in some cheerful music to the game to help with the mood of the game. I found the music on opengameart.org and was able to get a couple tracks by the same artist (3xBlast).

I used Google Fonts to find a suitable and fun font that fits with the feel of the game. I’ve also tried to keep the colours of the text consistent throughout the game.

Puzzles/Challenges

I added a couple challenges for level 3. The stomach acid is now fully set up to melt the player if they make a badly timed jump. To get across the river of acid I’ve thrown in a carrot for the player to ride, because carrots are, uh, resistant to acid?

CARROT BOAT!

To make the acid words, I’ve also added a large string of falling food into the acid. So, the player has to time their jump through this food waterfall. If the jump is timed too poorly then they will be pummelled by food and burn to death in acid.

The food waterfall, maybe time your jumps better than I did here.

Player Feedback

-No player feedback received this week </3

Bug Fixes

-Corrected jitter in the camera movement and parallax movement
-Fixed the spin of the player on level 2 when hitting and object.
-Fixed ‘Main Menu’ button so that it now works correctly.
-Fixed bug in sprinting animation.
